about

Liner notes (excerpt)

I've listened to this album through many times and I am convinced that Jeff Johnston and the members of his quartet have their priorities right.Their music has all the qualities of great jazz: it is all original but none of it contrived, the players are all tremendous technicians but there are no unnecessary displays of technique, the tunes are harmonically challenging and melodically fascinating. There is a great natural rhythm to everything. The moods vary from dark and mysterious to to strange and wonderful, to just plain fun; but whatever the mood is, the approach taken seems to be "music first".
Great care has been taken with dynamics, blend, the actual sounds of the instruments, and the overall feel of the music. Each tune is a gem by itself but each one is an important part of the whole project.
I want to say thank-you to Jeff, Martin, Jim and Mike for a truly enjoyable music experience.
